BTLA BROKER / 01 / FOR BUSINESSES

Business insurance audit.
See where cover ends.

Review of current policies: sums insured · business activities · limits and exclusions.

Your business changes. Policies do not always keep up. We will review your current cover, identify gaps and help you make informed decisions before the next renewal.

For businesses with existing policies, before renewal or following changes in activities.

01 / YOUR SITUATION

A good time to look at your policies.

A review is useful before renewing the programme, after business expansion and when a previous claim has revealed a difference between expectations and the contract wording.

  • The company has several policies with different insurers.
  • Locations, property or contracts have changed.
  • The board needs a clear picture of the remaining risks.

BEAVER AND SUPERPARROT / BUSINESS IN PRACTICE

The business grew. What about the policy sum?

Beaver bought more machines, built a hall and filled the warehouse. He renewed his policy just as he had the year before. Until a loss occurred.

Check whether your sum insured keeps pace with your business. The calculator shows a simplified underinsurance example; actual settlement depends on factors including the insurance basis, contract wording and property value.

02 / SCOPE OF OUR WORK

Three perspectives on one programme.

The scope and availability of cover depend on the company's situation and the terms of individual offers. We also discuss limitations together.

What do we check in these areas?

Business activities and risks

We establish what the company actually does, what its revenue depends on and which events could disrupt operations. We also ask about new investment and subcontractor relationships.

Policies and limitations

We compare the description of activities with contract cover, sums insured, sublimits, excesses and exclusions. We look for both gaps and cover that does not reflect the current situation.

Findings and priorities

We organise our recommendations: what needs urgent change, what to discuss at renewal and which risks remain with the business. Each recommendation should be supported by a specific scenario.

03 / THE OUTCOME OF WORKING TOGETHER

You know what needs a decision.

I want to review my current policies ↗
  • Review of existing cover and its limitations.
  • A list of data to complete or update.
  • Recommendations on cover and limits for further discussion.
  • Action priorities before changing or renewing policies.

04 / HOW WE START

From a conversation to an informed decision.

What should you prepare first?

For our first conversation, prepare current policies with attachments, a short business description and claims information. We will agree the scope of further analysis after getting to know your business.

What do we check in these areas?

We understand your situation

We establish the audit's purpose, activities and documents.

We review your cover

We compare business needs with contractual wording.

We discuss recommendations

We explain gaps, priorities and possible next steps.

05 / BEFORE WE TALK

Worth knowing.

Does an audit mean having to change insurers?

We do not assume that outcome in advance. The analysis may indicate a need to change terms, supplement information or retain part of the existing programme. The decision should follow from the findings.

Is sending the policy alone enough?

The policy is a good starting point, but general terms, clauses and attachments may also be needed. We ask about how the business actually operates and its claims history.

When is the best time to start a review?

Before renewal, allowing time to gather documents and discuss changes. If a new location is opening or operations are changing significantly, it is worth talking earlier, regardless of the policy expiry date.

Does a review guarantee a lower premium?

The goal is an informed choice of cover. Changing cover may increase or decrease the cost; we do not treat the premium alone as a measure of programme quality.

THREE AMOUNTS / CLEAR ASSUMPTIONS

Does your sum insured keep up with the value?

See how a simplified claim settlement changes when the sum insured is below the property value.

Assumption before calculating: the model applies a proportional reduction (average) unless you select first-loss cover or the tolerance entered disapplies it. We first apply the proportion, then deduct the excess, and finally apply the sum insured limit. The OWU may provide for a different order or method of calculation.

What property value should I enter?

The cost of rebuilding property or replacing it with new property of comparable specifications, as defined in the contract. It does not necessarily equal the original purchase price or book value.

Example: Rising construction costs may mean that a sum insured set a few years ago is no longer sufficient.

Glossary — open in a new tab ↗
What does the sum insured mean?

An amount specified in the contract for the insured property or another subject of cover. In property insurance, it generally sets the maximum liability, but it is not a promise that the entire amount will be paid.

Example: After expanding your premises, check whether the sum insured reflects your current assets.

Glossary — open in a new tab ↗

Compare the same property and the same valuation basis, for example reinstatement values. Enter zlotys, with grosze separated by a comma.

Why might the model reduce the payment?

A mechanism included in some policies: the payment is reduced in proportion to the sum insured compared with the property's value. Check when it applies and whether the contract includes a tolerance or an exception.

Example: At a 50% proportion, a PLN 100 000 loss produces PLN 50 000 in the simplified model, before other deductions and limits.

Advanced: tolerance, excess, first-loss basis

0–30%. The model compares the threshold with the uninsured proportion of the property value. The policy’s general terms and conditions may define the threshold differently.

A non-negative amount or a percentage from 0–100, depending on your choice above.

Excess — what does it mean?

The part of a loss that you bear yourself under the contract. It may be a fixed amount or a percentage. The policy terms determine how it is calculated, any minimum and how it combines with other deductions.

Example: A provision such as ‘10%, minimum PLN 1,000’ requires checking the amount on which the percentage is calculated.

Glossary — open in a new tab ↗
First-loss insurance — what does it mean?

An amount for the anticipated loss is agreed instead of insuring the full value of all the property. In this system, the average clause for underinsurance generally does not apply; the agreed sum insured and other terms still apply.

Example: Entering a lower sum insured yourself does not turn a standard policy into first-loss insurance.

Glossary — open in a new tab ↗

The calculation runs in your browser. We do not send or save these amounts.

A lower sum insured can mean a larger shortfall.

Enter your own scenario or use the example. You will see two versions of the same model.

How do we calculate it? Full assumptions and limitations

With the average clause: loss × ratio, followed by deducting the excess entered and applying the sum insured limit. Without the average clause: the loss less the same excess, up to the sum insured. The result cannot fall below zero. The full-sum comparison keeps the excess and changes the sum insured to the property's value. Amounts are rounded to grosze.

  • We assume a covered loss within one homogeneous category of property, with amounts stated on a comparable basis. A loss exceeding the property value triggers a warning about an inconsistent scenario.
  • We include an excess only if you enter one. We disregard sublimits, non-deductible franchises, previous payments and other limitations. The entire sum insured is assumed to be available.
  • Average does not automatically apply in every policy. Relevant factors include the insurance basis, contract wording, underinsurance tolerances and an assessment of whether a particular provision is permissible.
  • This does not assess lost profit or whether a particular decision is correct. The actual payment could be higher or lower.

A higher sum insured does not replace checking the scope of cover. A review also compares exclusions, limits and valuation methods.

SPECIFICS / BEFORE A DECISION

Before you request a quote.

What affects the scope of the review?

  • Number of policies and locations
  • Business activities and planned changes
  • Scope of the commissioned analysis

We will agree the scope of our work after learning about your business's needs and documents.

What will help our first conversation?

  • Current policies and insurance terms
  • List of important changes in the company
  • Next renewal date

Don't have everything? Start with a brief description. We will establish what can be added later.

What happens after you report a claim?

We will contact you about your needs, clarify the information and agree the scope of further analysis. An enquiry alone does not put cover in place.

FINDINGS FROM AN ANONYMISED CASE

What changed after the policy review?

The business had expanded its assets, but the sum insured had not been updated. This is a short case summary, not an extract from the original policy or audit document.

From an outdated sum insured to a review of cover
StageFinding or action
Before the auditAsset value: PLN 5,000,000. Sum insured: PLN 2,500,000.
The first lossA loss of PLN 100,000. Applying the proportional rule resulted in a payment of PLN 50,000.
After the BTLA reviewThe assets were reviewed and the sums insured were updated.
Two years laterHail damaged roofs and glazing. That loss was settled in full.

This was the outcome of this particular case. It does not guarantee the same settlement for another loss: the event, evidence and terms of the policy matter.
