BTLA BROKER / FOR BUSINESSES / 01
Insurance for manufacturing and industry.
We look at the whole process.
The production building, machinery and stock form a single system. We identify the links between them so that the discussion of protection also covers maintaining production, obligations to customers and returning to work after a loss.
BEAVER AND SUPERPARROT / BUSINESS IN PRACTICE
Beaver has a policy. What about business interruption?
Production stops. Bills keep coming. Would your business survive four months of such an interruption?
Check not only cover for your premises and machinery, but also the financial consequences of interruption. Calculate your own scenario, then let’s discuss BI: cover depends on the cause of downtime and the specific contract terms.

We start with how the product is made.
Not every machine is equally important to a plant. We establish bottlenecks, how long it would take to replace critical equipment and whom raw material supplies depend on. Only then do we discuss possible cover.
- The plant is expanding its machinery or launching a new line.
- Production depends on one location, installation or supplier.
- The company manufactures under its own brand, provides services or exports.
02 / MORE DETAIL
We bring together three perspectives.
What do we check in these areas?
Property and technology
We organise information about buildings, installations, machinery, tools and stock. We ask about equipment ownership, maintenance and how values were estimated. We discuss property entrusted to you and investments in progress separately.
Production continuity
We analyse possible downtime, alternative operating locations, parts availability and the cost of starting replacement production. Insuring interruption consequences requires checking the terms, not just adding a line to a policy.
Product and contracts
We discuss customers, product use and servicing activities. We examine the relevance of product liability, losses at customers’ premises and contractual insurance requirements.
03 / A SCENARIO TO DISCUSS
A scenario to analyse: a production line stops.
When equipment is damaged, its repair is not the only issue to consider. Parts delivery times, the possibility of outsourcing production to another facility and outstanding orders also matter. This illustrative scenario helps identify questions for an insurance offer; it does not determine whether a particular policy will cover every cost.
- A list of resources on which production depends.
- Sums insured and limits based on agreed valuation assumptions.
- Downtime scenarios and assumptions for returning to work.
- Liability cover linked to actual products and services.
What should you prepare?
Prepare a list of locations and key machines, current policies and claims details. A process description and identification of equipment that cannot be replaced quickly will be useful. We discuss detailed financial data at a later stage.
05 / USEFUL TO KNOW
Before the next step.
Can one policy cover the entire plant?
A programme can combine several types of cover, but their relationships must be checked. Property, machinery breakdown, interruption and liability cover do not follow automatically from a policy’s name.
What should be reported when production expands?
It is worth discussing a new location, machinery, changes in stock values or product types before introducing the changes. We will establish what information is needed to update the programme.
Do you also analyse customers' requirements?
Yes, business partners’ insurance requirements form part of the discussion. We compare them with available cover and identify issues that should not be equated with a liability certificate alone.
