BTLA BROKER / FOR BUSINESSES / 02
Insurance for transport and logistics.
We start with your role.
Carriage, freight forwarding, storage and shipping your own goods involve different interests. We combine an overview of transport operations with a review of the fleet, cargo, facilities and company liability.
01 / CONTEXT
An industry label does not describe every activity.
A company may transport, organise carriage and store goods at the same time. We ask which tasks it performs itself, which it outsources and what it is responsible for to the client. The cover discussion then goes beyond vehicle numbers.
- You combine your own transport with subcontracted carriage.
- You handle warehousing, transhipment or order consolidation.
- You change destinations, cargo types or business partners’ requirements.
02 / MORE DETAIL
We review the entire chain of operations.
What do we check in these areas?
Roles and documents
We compare the description of operations with contracts, orders and transport documents. It is important to distinguish carrying goods from organising transport and providing other logistics services.
Goods at each stage
We discuss cargo type, value and requirements, stops, transshipment and storage. We check where each cover ends and whether the next stage needs separate analysis.
Facilities and vehicles
We consider the fleet, warehouses, equipment and operational dependencies. Vehicle downtime and cargo damage are different events that may require different cover terms.
03 / A SCENARIO TO DISCUSS
A scenario to analyse: transport involving transhipment.
Goods travel in a subcontractor’s vehicle, spend the night in a warehouse and leave for the customer the next day. Each stage requires clarity about the company’s role, documentation and the interest needing protection. This sequence shows why checking just one carrier’s policy is not enough.
04 / REVIEW OUTCOME
One description of the operation, a clear division of cover.
Discuss your logistics operations ↗- Distinguishing the roles of carrier, freight forwarder and warehouse operator.
- A list of goods, routes and activities relevant to the enquiry.
- A comparison of liability cover and the interest in the cargo.
- Rules for updating the programme when operations change.
What should you prepare?
Gather a description of services, transport destinations, types of goods and information about the use of subcontractors. Include a fleet list and current policies, if available. Documents containing customer details will be submitted for analysis within the agreed scope.
05 / USEFUL TO KNOW
Before the next step.
Does OCP cover all logistics services?
You should not assume this. Storage, freight forwarding and additional activities must be checked against the definitions and cover of the particular contract.
Is it worth reviewing a subcontractor’s policy?
Yes. Check that its scope matches the task assigned. A certificate alone does not confirm cover for every operation or replace a review of your own obligations.
When should the description of activities be updated?
Particularly before entering new destinations, changing cargo or starting services not previously provided. The existing programme's terms also specify disclosure obligations.
