BTLA BROKER / HOW WE WORK / 02
We clarify the risks.
You know what needs a decision.
We turn the information gathered into a clear picture of needs and limitations. We discuss loss scenarios, available cover and the risks that remain with the business. Our recommendation relates to specific assumptions.
01 / CONTEXT
Not all risks carry the same weight.
A list of potential events is not enough to select cover. We discuss their consequences for the business: repairing property, downtime, liability to others and organisational costs. We set priorities on that basis.
- Which event could stop operations?
- Which costs can the company bear itself?
- Which restriction in your current policy needs clarification?
02 / MORE DETAIL
From scenario to recommendation.
Scenarios and dependencies
We connect an event with its possible consequences. We also ask about the impact of suppliers, subcontractors and key resources. This means cover is not assessed only in isolation.
Discuss this coverSums insured, limits and exclusions
We explain the difference between a sum insured, a sublimit and an excess. We check the definitions and obligations that may determine whether cover applies.
Discuss this coverPriorities and rationale
We distinguish issues needing urgent discussion from changes that can wait until renewal. We identify the recommendation’s assumptions and questions requiring further information.
Discuss this cover03 / A SCENARIO TO DISCUSS
Example for analysis: a high sum insured, a low sublimit.
A programme may have a high overall sum insured while also imposing a separate limit for a particular type of event. That is why we compare the terms for a selected scenario, rather than judging cover solely by the largest amount on the document.
- A list of areas requiring cover or change.
- Clear limitations and costs remaining with the business.
- A basis for comparing insurers' proposals.
- Action priorities and information needed to decide.
What should you prepare?
Information from the first stage, asset values, scale of operations and significant contracts will be useful. We flag unclear values or assumptions as requiring further information rather than treating them as established facts.
05 / USEFUL TO KNOW
Before the next step.
Does a recommendation mean buying every available type of cover?
No. Its purpose is to select cover on a reasoned basis. We discuss the significance of individual risks, the available terms and the implications of leaving some costs with the business.
Does an exclusion missing from a quotation summary mean there are no restrictions?
Do not assume this. Consider the documents defining the contract’s scope, definitions, limits and obligations, not just the summary table.
Can one correct sum insured be specified for every business?
The sum insured must be related to the scale of operations, values, scenarios and offer terms. The same amount may mean different things to two businesses.
