BTLA BROKER / BUSINESS INTERRUPTION CALCULATOR
Business stops.
Costs do not always stop.
While premises or machinery are being repaired, bills keep coming. Calculate the cost of interruption and see why it is worth combining property cover with business interruption insurance (BI). BTLA will help tailor the programme to your activities.
SCENARIO / NO CONTACT DETAILS REQUIRED
How much does business downtime cost?
Scenario model: (monthly fixed costs + monthly operating profit) × months of interruption + one-off additional costs. We assume total interruption and constant amounts. This is not a BI claim valuation: the OWU define matters such as gross profit, the indemnity period and the time excess differently from this simple model.
A pause in work does not stop every cost.

SCENARIO COST — NOT A CLAIM PAYMENT ESTIMATE
Total downtime cost in this scenario
This is the cost of the assumed scenario, not the compensation payable under a policy.

BEAVER AND SUPERPARROT / BUSINESS IN PRACTICE
Beaver has a policy. What about business interruption?
Production stops. Bills keep coming. Would your business survive four months of such an interruption?
Check not only cover for your premises and machinery, but also the financial consequences of interruption. Calculate your own scenario, then let’s discuss BI: cover depends on the cause of downtime and the specific contract terms.

The machine can be repaired. The business still has to survive the interruption.
BI, or business interruption insurance, may cover lost profits and fixed costs during downtime following damage covered by the contract. A property or machinery policy alone does not automatically provide this cover.
For a machinery breakdown, we separately check machinery breakdown cover (MB) and loss of profit following damage to it (MLOP). BTLA helps connect these elements: establish the insured events, financial information, indemnity period and limitations.

What should you check beyond the amount?
Realistic reinstatement time
Rebuilding the premises is not always the end of the interruption. Check machinery delivery and commissioning times, permits and customers’ return.
Discuss this coverContract definitions
Insurance gross profit may not correspond to the figure in the financial statements. Preparing a programme requires appropriate information and the definitions in the OWU.
Discuss this coverCause of interruption
Not every interruption is covered. The required triggering event, property insurance, extensions, excesses and indemnity period all matter.
Discuss this coverQUESTIONS BEFORE CONTACTING US
Let’s establish what you can expect.
Is the calculated amount the sum insured for loss of profits?
No. It illustrates the cost of the scenario entered. Choosing the sum insured and period requires financial information, forecasts and the terms of the particular policy.
Is a loan repayment an operating cost?
Not in full. Separate capital repayments from financing costs and do not count costs already included in the result twice. During an audit, we distinguish cash requirements from insurance definitions.
What if the business continues to operate partially during downtime?
This simple model assumes total interruption and constant amounts. Partial production, alternative operations and savings require a separate scenario.
Does a shorter indemnity period in the policy automatically mean no payment for the remaining months?
The calculator shows only the difference between periods. The scope and period of benefits are determined by the terms of the specific contract.
